In Germany, data retention is already in place for communication channels such phone calls, Internet access and e-mails. A recent survey (German document) demonstrated that German citizens are aware about the way there private data are logged and changed their behavior in this way. Read comments about this survey here.
And what about Belgium? The IBPT (Belgian Institute for Postal services and Telecommunications) released a draft of the implementation of the EU directive regarding data retention in Belgian Law.
Based on the European directory, the IBPT with the help of the FCCU (Federal Computer Crime Unit) and the SPF Justice (Federal Public Service of Justice) prepared a document and released it for comments to the different partners (ISP, mobile operators, …). In the same time, IBPT would like to receive an estimation of costs to implement the data retention project for 6, 12 or 24 months. The document is provided in French or Dutch.
