An OpenBSD legend falls :(

Today, I read this on openbsd-misc:

Subject: [BSD-Misc] An OpenBSD legend falls 🙁

Metawire.org, one of the last true free shell/hosting servers, today lost the
arrangement which had kept it on the Internet for the last few months.Metawire
is a proud supporter and user of OpenBSD. It is also the primary site for
development and testing of Stephanie, an experimental patchset designed to add
extra security and privacy features to the OpenBSD kernel.

At its peak Metawire supported over 5500 users, and allowed them privileges few
other providers did. At its peak Metawire was host to several small free
software projects, and provided hosting/email/compiler access for many who could
not afford it.

Through its year of operation, numerous attempts were made to compromise the
Metawire.org server. Thanks to the proven power of OpenBSD, none of them were
successful. To its end, our server provided reliable and secure service to
every one of our users.

Today that has all been lost thanks to the carelessness and ignorance of someone
with the power to unleash a multi-terabyte flood on the host which provided us a
free uplink because they respected our work. The person who helped us out and
allowed us to help others for the last few months may easily lose his job over
this, and somewhere a 12-year-old thinks he has enacted justice for some
perceived wrong.

The world is fucked up.

For all those that we touched at some point or another, I’d like to thank you
and let you know that the true hacker spirit lives on.

We’ll be back, in some form or another.

Cheers,

— Mike Baehr (tehdely) and the rest of the Metawire team

As I operate myself a free shell service, I totally agree with their decision!
Often I already decided to stop everything…
Their conclusion is evident: “The world is fucked up.” 🙁
